FAQ

Whether you’re planning your first ski touring adventure or you’re a seasoned backcountry skier exploring new terrain, it’s natural to have questions. This page covers the most common things people ask us before joining a guided ski touring trip – from gear requirements to safety and experience levels. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to reach out. We’re here to help you prepare, feel confident, and enjoy the mountains to the fullest.

Can I join a ski touring trip without prior experience?

Yes – we offer tours suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. If you’re new to ski touring, we recommend choosing one of our introductory trips designed to teach the basics in a safe and supportive environment. You should, however, feel confident skiing on-piste in variable snow conditions. We’ll help you with the rest – from technique to equipment.

Pro tip: If you’re unsure whether a trip matches your fitness or skill level, just reach out – we’ll help you pick the right one.

What are the most common questions before a guided ski touring trip?

Here are some of the things people often ask us before booking:

  • Do I need to bring all my own gear? Not necessarily – rental options are available (see below).

  • How fit do I need to be? Our tours range from easy to demanding – if you can hike for several hours and ski with control off-piste, you’re good to go.

  • Is avalanche gear required? Yes – all participants must carry and know how to use a beacon, probe, and shovel (training is provided if needed).

  • Are the guides certified? Absolutely – all our trips are led by IFMGA or local certified mountain guides.

  • What if the weather is bad? Safety is our top priority. We always adapt the itinerary based on weather and snow conditions.

What gear do I need for ski touring?

A full ski touring setup includes:

  • Touring skis with touring bindings

  • Ski touring boots

  • Skins (for walking uphill)

  • Poles (adjustable if possible)

  • Avalanche safety gear: beacon, shovel, probe

  • Backpack (with enough space for food, layers, water, safety gear)

  • Helmet, sunglasses/goggles, layers suitable for mountain weather

Depending on the trip, crampons and an ice axe may be required.

No gear? No problem. We can help you rent high-quality equipment at or near the tour location. Just let us know in advance what you need, and we’ll handle the logistics.

How safe are guided ski touring trips?

Safety is the foundation of every trip we offer. Our guides are not just experienced skiers – they are trained in mountain rescue, avalanche forecasting, and emergency response.

Here’s what makes the difference:

  • Certified guides with deep local knowledge

  • Group size is kept small for better management and personalized support

  • Daily avalanche and weather assessments

  • Route planning with multiple contingencies

  • Equipment checks before each departure

While backcountry skiing always involves some risk, traveling with a professional guide drastically reduces it. It also means you get to focus on enjoying the mountains while someone else takes care of the decisions.
