Ski touring in Bulgaria: more skiing, less climbing

Bulgaria has the highest mountains in the Balkans and well-built ski resorts. Gondolas and chairlifts in Borovets, Bansko and Bezbog take us to 2,200–2,550 m, so most days are short climbs followed by long descents of up to 1,900 m.

Ski touring is still rare here. In the national parks you meet more snowmobiles than other skiers, and summits on every aspect let the guide choose the best snow each day. In the evening you are back in a comfortable hotel with a pool or sauna.

Highlights

  • Musala (2,925 m), the highest peak in the Balkans
  • Vihren (2,914 m), the highest peak of the Pirin range
  • Ski touring beneath the Seven Rila Lakes
  • Descents of up to 1,900 m to Bansko and the Damyanitsa valley
  • Thermal pools in Sapareva Banya and the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery nearby

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival. Meet the guide at Sofia Airport and transfer (about 1.5 hours) to Govedartsi (1,200 m) at the foot of the Rila mountains.

Day 2 – Malyovitsa (2,729 m). From 1,730 m past Malyovitsa Hut and the Dears Lake to the summit, then down the valley. About 7 hours, +1,000 m / −1,000 m.

Day 3 – Musala (2,925 m). Gondola from Borovets to 2,360 m, climb to the highest peak in the Balkans and ski all the way to Borovets (1,300 m). Transfer to Panichishte with a stop at the thermal pools in Sapareva Banya. +600 m / −1,600 m.

Day 4 – Seven Rila Lakes. Chairlift to Rila Lakes Hut, climb to the main ridge and ski past the lakes and through the forest to the valley. +400 m / −1,000 m.

Day 5 – Todorka (2,746 m) and Bansko. Transfer to Bansko, lifts to 2,550 m, a short climb on the Todorka ridge and a long descent through the Banderitsa valley to town. +200 m / −1,800 m.

Day 6 – Polezan (2,851 m). Bezbog chairlift to 2,240 m, climb to one of the highest peaks in Pirin and ski the long Damyanitsa valley. +610 m / −1,900 m.

Day 7 – Vihren (2,914 m). An early start for the highest peak in Pirin. The most demanding day of the week, if snow and weather allow.

Day 8 – Departure. Transfer to Sofia Airport (about 2.5 hours), with a short visit to the capital if your flight allows.

Equipment

Bring full ski touring gear: skis or splitboard with skins, touring boots, poles, helmet and avalanche safety equipment (beacon, shovel, probe). Rental gear can be arranged if you book at least 21 days ahead. Shop ski touring equipment or see which destination fits which month.
