ALTAI SKITOURING

Skitouring in Russia, south Siberia. We will ski at a very special point on our planet. It is basically the most continental point on earth, as it is the furthest from all the oceans. But it is also a destination with very special vibes.
Altai in the altaic language means Golden Mountain. According to legends and to the tradition of ancient sages, the process of renewing spiritual energy on Earth takes place right here. Mount Beluha, Altai highest mountain plays the role of the altar of the Earth. The holy cities of Altai are called energy centers or cities of power in the language of scientists. According to many theosophists and, more recently, scientists, Altai is considered to be the strongest spiritual and energy center in the world. So, based on all of the above, ski touring here in the Altai has a really special character. You will certainly not remember this trip just because of skiing. Because of all this, we definitely recommend a slightly longer Altai ski touring trip to these beautiful places.

About Altai

The Altai mountains are situated in Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and a small part of China. It is the center of Eurasia where Siberia and Central Asia come together, which makes it a unique location with many options and almost no other place is similar to this. Translated from the Mongolian language the word Altai means “golden mountains” and indeed they are a unique natural treasure.

Three major factors make Altay mountains a recreational domain of great value: amazing natural diversity (various landscapes, climates, an abundance of wildlife); thin population, historically nomadic (Mongolian and Kazakh ethnos), who has a very natural way of life; and remoteness from any industries (the region lives only for tourism and agriculture).

The genuine treasure of the mountains is “Belukha”, the highest point of the Altai Mountains, and of the Siberian Region as well. It is of 4509 meters high and is completely covered with snow, from its peak to its bottom.

About Aktru Valley

The valley is interesting for both trekking in summer and skiing in winter. Here the peaks rise from 3500 to 4000 m high, and the highest peaks are Maashey-Bash (4177 m) and Aktru-Bash (4044 m). There are also 5 glaciers in the mountain range: Mali Aktru, Veliki Aktru, Slap, Kyzyltash, and Karatash. Not far from our accommodation is a beautiful, more than a 600-year-old forest of Siberian cedar, waterfalls, and lakes.

Our accommodation is in the Aktru base camp, which is the oldest camp in the area (since 1938) and lies right at the foot of the Aktru glaciers. Accommodation with a full board with traditional Russian cuisine in houses made of Siberian cedar, which can accommodate from 6 to 15 people. There is also a café in the camp and the use of wifi is available at an additional cost. Every evening, for the purpose of relaxation and regeneration, we have a Russian sauna or bath, as the Russians say.

Day 1 GORNO ALTAYSK

We’ll gather in Gorno-Altaysk in the afternoon and start with a presentation of the program in the hotel.

Day 2GORNO ALTAYSK - KURAJ - AKTRU CAMP

Transport to Kuray (approx. 8 hours), along the famous Chui tract, which connects Russia with Mongolia. Meeting with our local guide in Kuraj, then transfer by off-road vehicle ZIL-131 to the Aktru valley (30 km). Accommodation in the center “Altaj-Aktru” at an altitude of 2150 m, which is our starting point. Altai dinner and relaxation in the Russian sauna.

Day 3SKI TOURING

We start with a tour towards the glacier Big Aktru and the Blue Lake (2840 m) and towards the top of Aktru. Descent along the slope of the western peak of Aktru from 4007 m. On this day, about 1900 m of altitude difference is made.

Day 4SKI TOURING

A tour to the Small Aktru glacier and the ascent to the top, which does not have an official name, so they call it Q3242, which is a sign of its height. From here there is a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains, which stretches all the way to Mongolia. A descent down the glacier follows. Today we will make about 1000 m altitude difference.

Day 5SKI TOURING

This day will be quite tiring, as we climb to the rocky peak Kupol, 3556 m high. We start the descent from the southeastern slope from the Small Aktru glacier, which lies between the peaks of Snezhnaya and Karatash. The slope is 15-45 °, the total altitude difference is 1500 m.

Day 6SKI TOURING

Tour to the right glacier of Big Aktru. Descent along the southern slopes of the glacier.

FAQ

Where and when do I meet your team?

Our team will wait for you at the airport. If you are arriving by land meeting point is also at the airport or elsewhere if you let us know where (this service is not included in a price). After the meeting, you will be transferred to your accommodation. Please note, that in some areas, due to a long drive to our base, we provide only one transportation per group, usually in the morning (Iceland, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Altai…). So take into consideration that one extra day and accommodation may be necessary.

Where do I meet my guide?

The guide will arrange a specific meeting location and time with you specifically. Most commonly, this location is at your accommodation or our base.

How much hiking up is involved?

There will be approximately 4-6 hours of hiking broken up in the day and approximately 800~1100 vertical meters of skiing.

Do I need climbing skins?

Yes, all of our ski touring tours require uphill travel, and skins are by far the most efficient way. Skins attach to the base of skis or split-snowboards, peel off at the top of the run, and get stowed in a pocket for the downhill fun.

Can I rent equipment?

You can rent equipment, but you need to inform us at least 21 days before the start of your program. Our trips are in remote areas where there are no shops or rental services, so we need to provide them from a distance. Please note that rental on the spot is usually not available.
