SKI TOURING MONTENEGRO

Montenegro Ski touring, skitouring in the snow paradise of the Balkans! Experience a still unknown skitouring Eldorado in the snow-covered Montenegro mountains. Untracked powder snow slopes and peaks with wide views of the multifaceted country offer the best opportunities for ski touring adventurers with a pioneering spirit. Should the weather not play along, we will switch to small ski areas with attractive alternative oh freeride along the piste.

The untamed beauty of Montenegro between the Adriatic Sea and high peaks. From the Mediterranean flair of the south coast to the lonely alpine mountains. An exciting journey for the ambitious ski tourer in the Durmitor Mountains and the Bjelasica Mountains. Bjelasica with the Biogradska Gora National Park and Durmitor with the National Park of the same name and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The easy to medium difficult tours offer ski mountaineers a wide range of ski tours. The summit heights in Durmitor reach around 2.500 m (Sljeme, 2.445 m or Bobotov Kuk, 2.523 m) with a maximum of 1.200 meters of ascent and descent. While the Bjelasica Mountains offer gentler terrain and leisurely tours, the ski tours in Durmitor are more difficult with the combination of rocky mountains, high valleys and steep steps.

About Montenegro, Durmitor and Bjelasica

Montenegro is a small mountainous republic in the Balkans. It is one of the smallest countries and, after independence in 2006, also one of the youngest countries in the world. However, Montenegro has an incredible diversity in such a small space. A varied sea coast, a large Skadar lake, mountain groups, friendly people and a turbulent history. The country is better known for tourism from the summer season. In summer tourists often use Durmitor as a starting point for mountain biking, four-wheel drive or hiking tours. The world famous Tara Gorge, the deepest gorge in Europe, is only about 20 minutes away by car.

But we go there in Montenegro in winter, when the mountain expanses are almost untouched. We will explore the slopes of Durmitor and Bjelasica, where Kolašin is now the largest Montenegrin winter sports center. Flat slopes and high-alpine climbs await ski tourers high above the somewhat sleepy winter sports resort of Zabljak.

Itinerary

Day 1PODGORICA - ŽABLJAK

Transfer from Podgorica to Žabljak, accommodation in hotel, dinner.

Day 2 SKI TOURING VELIKI ŠTUOC (2104 m)

After breakfast departure for a sightseeing tour of the plateau in the vicinity of Žabljak. After the former Bosača ski resort, we will slowly gain altitude and climb the wide slopes of Dolovi to Mali Štuoc (1953 m). After a slight descent, we will ascend to Veliki Štuoc (2104 m). From the northernmost peak of Durmitor there is a beautiful view of our future ski destinations and Tara canyon, which is more lonely in winter. The direction os skiing will depend on the snow conditions. We will finish it on the outskirts of the city. After a stop at Žabljak, return to the hotel and have dinner.

Day 3SKI TOURING SAVIN KUK (2313 m) and SLJEME (2445 m)

After breakfast, a short drive to the Savin Kuk ski center and a ride with two chairlifts to an altitude of 2200 meters. From the upper station ascent to Savin Kuk (2313 m). Beautiful views of the highest Durmitor peaks, Sinjajevina, Komovi and Prokletije. We will then head to the eastern peak of Šljeme (2445 m), a parade ski touring mountain in the Durmitor Mountains. We will use the lift again on the ascent, and we will ski from the top to the foothills. After a pleasant rest with a drink, drive to the hotel and dinner.

Day 4SKI TOURING CVOROV BOGAZ (2152 m)

Transport to Ivan dol, then with skis over the icy Black Lake, first through the forest and past Veljko’s plate to Stari katun. We will climb the snowy expanses on the two-headed ski hub Čvorov Bogaz (2152 m). Bogaz in Turkish means an impassable path or strait. From the top there is an extensive view of the highest Durmitor peak Bobotov Kuk, the typical Minin Bogaz and Bandijerna, which will be our next destination. The effort of the ascent will be rewarded with unforgettable skiing in the valley. Return to Žabljak and dinner.

Day 5SKI TOURING TROJNI PREVOJ (2245 m) and BANDIJERNA (2409 m)

This day is reserved for the royal tour. Following the already known path, we will climb to Veljkova slab and later to the shelter on Lokvica. In the canopy of the valley, a steeper part will be waiting for us, which will take us to the plateau, from where it is no longer far to the Triple Pass (2245 m). Snow conditions may allow us access to Bandjerna (2409 m). We will have a view of the southern part of Durmitor, and we will enjoy skiing on one of the selected options. We will end a long and hard day in Žabljak. This is also the end of our skitouring in Durmitor National Park.

Day 6TRANSFER TO KOLASIN (1450 m) and SKI TOURING KLJUC (1973 m)

After breakfast drive to the famous bridge on Đurđevića Tara and through the canyon of Tara to the extensive mountain group Bjelasica. Here are still preserved protected primeval forests, above which rise peaks of metamorphic rocks in contrast to the limestone Durmitor. In front of Kolašin we will turn to the largest winter sports center Kolašin. We will take the ski lift to the northern slopes and ascent to peak of Kljuć (1973 m). The view extends practically to the whole of Montenegro, Serbia and Albania. From the top skiing to the lower station. Transport to Kolašin with, hotel  accommodation and dinner.

Day 7SKI TOURING TROGLAVA (2072 m) and CRNA GLAVA (2139 m), transfer to Budva

Drive to the lower station of the new ski lift, which will take us almost to the top of Troglava (2072 m). From there we will continue our tour towards Crna glava (2139 m), the highest peak of Bjelasica. Unlike the neighboring peaks, it is overgrown with dwarf pine. The vast high plateau boasts many lakes, so it is visited by many mountaineers and tourists in the summer. To conclude, we will have a nice descent into the valley.

This is followed by a drive along the gorge of the Moraća River to the capital Podgorica and than to Skadar Lake to the Adriatic coast. Accommodation at a hotel in Budva, dinner. Te end of our stay in Montenegro.

Day 8PODGORICA AIRPORT

Flight home.

FAQ

Where and when do I meet your team?

Our team will wait for you at the airport. If you are arriving by land meeting point is also at the airport or elsewhere if you let us know where (this service is not included in a price). After the meeting, you will be transferred to your accommodation. Please note, that in some areas, due to a long drive to our base, we provide only one transportation per group, usually in the morning (Iceland, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Altai…). So take into consideration that one extra day and accommodation may be necessary.

Where do I meet my guide?

The guide will arrange a specific meeting location and time with you specifically. Most commonly, this location is at your accommodation or our base.

How much hiking up is involved?

There will be approximately 4-6 hours of hiking broken up in the day and approximately 800~1100 vertical meters of skiing.

Do I need climbing skins?

Yes, all of our ski touring tours require uphill travel, and skins are by far the most efficient way. Skins attach to the base of skis or split-snowboards, peel off at the top of the run, and get stowed in a pocket for the downhill fun.

Can I rent equipment?

You can rent equipment, but you need to inform us at least 21 days before the start of your program. Our trips are in remote areas where there are no shops or rental services, so we need to provide them from a distance. Please note that rental on the spot is usually not available.
