VAN, TURKEY

The city of Van is located in eastern Turkey, next to Turkey’s largest lake. It is surrounded by dozens of giant mountains, rising almost 4000 m above sea level. Almost every mountain in this region is suitable for ski tours. Winters are cold and snowy. Snow reaches almost to the lake until mid-March. Almost every mountain offers a view of the lake. The snow quality is high, both on loose snow and on firn. Since Van is also a lively city, there is a large selection of restaurants and pubs to choose from in the evenings.

Tour Details

These tours require good body condition and good skiing skills. The ascents and descents are long. On average, 1100–1600 heights have to be processed, so the slopes are correspondingly long. The maximum steepness of the slopes is about 30-35°. The selected mountains are ideal skiing destinations for keen skiers. This is a magnificent exotic destination that does not require any special skiing skills other than the necessary physical condition.

Itinerary

Day 1Flight to Van via Istanbul.

Arrival in the city of Van, transfer to the hotel in the center of Van.

Day 2Early flight to Van, short hike to the left shoulder of Mount Artos above Abali (2970 m).

The starting point of the warm-up tour is the village of Abali. After a 45-minute trek, we climb from 1800 m to the very bottom of the very long ridge of Mount Artos at an altitude of almost 3000 m. Ski descent overlooking the lake.

Day 3Ski touring to Mount Artos (3,537m)

Today’s mountain is Artos, with probably the best view of the lake of any ski mountain in the area, at 3,537m. The climb is via the north side with uninterrupted views of the lake from the town Gevas. The descent will be only along wide snowfields, then along a steep, narrow valley back to the starting point.

Day 4Ski tour to Mount Mevzi (3280 m)

Today we will continue our journey towards Chatak, where the village of Onagil is located. From this village we begin our ski tour through the western face of the mountain. And again we have a magnificent view of Lake Van. The descent is no less magnificent. We return to Van at the hotel again.

Day 5Free day

Today is a day of rest. We will go to Gevas and continue by boat to the island of Akdamar with the famous Armenian church of the Middle Ages. After lunch in Gevas, the day in Van is still free or you can watch along with the stunning sunset on the lake (depending on the weather).

Day 6Ski tour to Mount Kartaltepe (3300 m)

After a 45-minute drive, just below the village of Boyunpinar, we begin the ascent of Mount Kartaltepe, a steep mountain that is a pleasure to descend, again with views of Lake Van of course.

Day 7Ski tour on Mount Baset (3780 m)

After an hour’s drive, we arrive in the village of Bagriyanik and begin the ascent to Mount Baset, one of the highest mountains in the area. The climb is steep and leads to the race track. The route follows the same route again.

Day 8Flight home or ski tour to Mount Kawussahap (3450 m).

Access to Mount Kawussahap leads along Lake Van to the village of Yanikchay, which lies at the end of a long plain. From here, rise into the sky and up the mountain, and then down the mountain.
