Why ski touring in Georgia?

Svaneti sits on the south side of the Greater Caucasus, where storms from the Black Sea leave generous, often light snow. The terrain around Mestia ranges from open alpine bowls to tree runs, so there is good skiing even when the weather closes in.

Prices are lower than in the Alps, the slopes are quiet and the culture is a big part of the trip: Svan towers, Georgian food and an optional day in Ushguli, Europe’s highest permanently inhabited village.

Highlights

  • Tours with close views of Ushba (4,710 m)
  • Freeride and warm-up laps at Tetnuldi (2,200–3,100 m)
  • Optional trip to Ushguli beneath Shkhara (5,203 m)
  • Breakfast, dinner and packed lunches included
  • Weekly departures all winter

Itinerary

Day 1 – Kutaisi to Mestia. About five hours by road into the mountains, briefing with the guide and a short walk through Mestia.

Day 2 – Tetnuldi. Warm-up at the Tetnuldi ski area. The guide checks everyone’s level and, if conditions allow, adds a short tour.

Day 3 – Around Mestia. The first full tour with 600–1,000 m of ascent, ideally towards Mazeri for close views of Ushba.

Day 4 – Around Mestia. A longer tour of at least 900 m, for example in the Laila range.

Day 5 – Best tour of the day or Ushguli. The guide picks the best option for the snow. Optional full-day trip to Ushguli at extra cost.

Day 6 – Free day. Ski Tetnuldi on your own or book an extra guided tour.

Day 7 – Last ski day. A final tour, then an evening in Mestia or the drive to Kutaisi, depending on road conditions.

Day 8 – Departure. Transfer to Kutaisi airport.
